FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. Why is my pool water cloudy?

    A. Several things can cause a pool to lose its clarity – inadequate water circulation, chemical imbalance, poor filtration, low sanitizer levels or lack of oxidation.

  • Q. Can algae really hurt my pool?

    A. Yes! If left unchecked, algae can grow in free-floating patches or cling to pool walls. Not only can algae clog filters, it eventually can cause pool surface damage and impact swimmers’ health.

  • Q. Can I experiment with chemicals till I get the water quality I want?

    A. NEVER experiment! Improper measuring and mixing of chemicals – whether diluted or concentrated – can create both unwanted reactions and potential health hazards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions with special attention to safety gear, clean up and storage.

  • Q. What is RWI?

    A. RWI stands for recreational water illnesses that are caused by bacteria found in water, such as pools and spas. RWI usually involves diarrhea-type illnesses, but also can cause skin rash and ear, eye or respiratory infections. Pool and spa water requires proper chemical treatment to lessen the incidence of RWI. Also, people should avoid swallowing pool water and not swim while sick.

  • Q. How often should I have my pool cleaned?

You should clean your pool regularly to help prevent the build up of debris and algae growth.  It's hard to give an exact schedule for cleaning because there are several factors that influence it.  For example; you should clean your pool more often if you live in a warm environment or you're experiencing heavy usage or if there has been some sort of event that that has deposited leaves or other vegitation in your pool.

Pools typically require less cleaning in the winter as usage is usually down and the weather is usually colder.  But you should always keep a lookout for leaves and other materials that can be deposited in the pool.

  • Q. How often should I check my water chemistry in my pool?

During the swimming season, you should check your water's chemistry at least once a week to make sure the chemical levels are balanced and safe for swimmers. Some pool owners might need to do tests more frequently, particularly if the water chemistry is causing issues like algae development or hazy water. Testing your water is also a good idea if it has been a while since a hard downpour or if a lot of people have used the pool.

  • Q. How long does a typical pool cleaning take?

That can really vary.  For example, some days you can get away with just testing the water chemistry (pH and chlorine).  If everything falls within range and the pool is clean then it may only actually take you 5 minutes.

But if the chemistry is off and/or you've recently experienced an event that has dumped leaves or dirt into the pool then you're looking at potentially over an hour to get everything back into tip-top shape.

And of course, the bigger the pool, the longer cleaning takes.
