How to Raise pH in a Pool

The ideal pH level for a swimming pool is between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH is above 7.8 or below 7.2 it's easy to make to make adjustments. 

Testing is a simple process and can be done easily with a test kit found at pool supply stores, hardware stores, and online retailers.

Most test kits include test strips or liquid reagents that you add to a small sample of pool water. The test will indicate the pH level by either changing the color of the water or by displaying a numerical value on the test strip or test kit.

The process is quick and usually takes only a few minutes.  It doesn't require any special skills. But, it is important to follow the instructions to ensure accurate results. In most cases, low pH levels are caused by natural factors like a heavy rainstorm, overuse, and improper use of chemicals. Natural rainwater has a pH of 5 – 5.5, so it is naturally acidic. A substantial amount of rainfall can alter the pH of pool water causing it to become more acidic.

To raise your pH, you can add an alkalinity increaser.  For example, you can use sodium bicarbonate.  Sodium bicarbonate is also known as baking soda.   This will raise the pH level as well as increasing the pool's alkalinity. Follow the instructions on the package for the correct amount to add based on your pool size and how much you need to increase your pH.

Wait and retest: Allow the chemicals to circulate in the pool for at least 4 hours and then retest the pH level. If the pH is still too low, repeat the process until the desired pH level is achieved.

Note: It's important not to add too much chemicals at once to avoid over-treating the pool water. Also, be sure to follow all safety precautions when handling pool chemicals, and always store them in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets.
