How to Raise pH in a Pool

Why Raise Your Pool's pH

Having the proper pH level in a swimming pool is important for several reasons:

Comfort: The proper pH level ensures that the water in the pool is comfortable for swimmers. Water that is too acidic or too basic can cause skin irritation, eye irritation, and even damage pool equipment.

Sanitation: Proper pH levels are important for maintaining the effectiveness of pool sanitizers, such as chlorine. If the pH level is too low, the chlorine will be less effective at killing bacteria and other contaminants in the pool water. If the pH level is too high, the chlorine will become less effective and may cause scaling on the pool surfaces.

Equipment protection: Maintaining the proper pH level can help protect the pool equipment, such as the filter, pump, and heater. Water that is too acidic or too basic can cause corrosion or scale buildup on the equipment, leading to damage and decreased lifespan.

Water balance: The pH level is an important part of overall water balance in a swimming pool. Proper water balance ensures that the pool water is safe, comfortable, and long-lasting.

Testing Your Pool's pH

The ideal pH level for a swimming pool is between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH is above 7.8 or below 7.2 it's easy to make to make adjustments.

Testing is a simple process and can be done easily with a test kit found at pool supply stores, hardware stores, and online retailers.

Most test kits include test strips or liquid reagents that you add to a small sample of pool water. The test will indicate the pH level by either changing the color of the water or by displaying a numerical value on the test strip or test kit.

The process is quick and usually takes only a few minutes.  It doesn't require any special skills. But, it is important to follow the instructions to ensure accurate results. If you are unsure about how to test the pH of your pool water, you can ask for assistance at a local pool supply store or consult a professional pool service company.

In most cases, low pH levels are caused by natural factors like a heavy rainstorm, overuse, and improper use of chemicals. Natural rainwater has a pH of 5 – 5.5, so it is naturally acidic. A substantial amount of rainfall can alter the pH of pool water causing it to become more acidic.

To raise your pH, you can add an alkalinity increaser.  For example, you can use sodium bicarbonate.  Sodium bicarbonate is also known as baking soda.   This will raise the pH level as well as increasing the pool's alkalinity. Follow the instructions on the package for the correct amount to add based on your pool size and how much you need to increase your pH.

Wait and retest: Allow the chemicals to circulate in the pool for at least 4 hours and then retest the pH level. If the pH is still too low, repeat the process until the desired pH level is achieved.

Note: It's important not to add too much chemicals at once to avoid over-treating the pool water. Also, be sure to follow all safety precautions when handling pool chemicals, and always store them in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets.

For a number of reasons, a swimming pool's pH level needs to be just right. The water in the pool is more comfortable for swimming when the pH is at the right level. Water that is either too acidic or too basic can irritate the skin, the eyes, and possibly eventually harm pool equipment over time.
